FAQ

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
We collected here many of the questions that our students and divers were asking us and we thought this information could be very helpful for you to know.

General Scuba Diving FAQ

The acronym “scuba“ stands for “Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus”. With this apparatus, based on a cylinder full of a compressed breathable gas and a device which delivers it at environmental pressure, called regulator, the scuba diver is able to breath underwater.

When applying the international standards, scuba diving is very safe, since it’s based on overcautious safety rules which are adapted to everyone’s conditions. High standards were implemented to make it the safe sport that it is today. With our experience and quality service, we make sure that your diving adventure with us is extremely safe.

Like being in the movie versus watching it. While being at the water surface and breath through the snorkel, scuba diving is about breathing underwater thanks to a Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus  (SCUBA). Basically it consists of a cylinder filled with a compressed breathable gas (air or other air-like gas mixtures in case of Nitrox or Trimix) that is connected with a breathing device called regulator, which delivers the gas at environmental pressure. A diver can enjoy the freedom of effortless swimming in depth, when using our buoyancy compensator (BC) with integrated weight pockets system for the maximum comfort.

A freediver descends underwater with only one breath of air or oxygen, whereas a scuba diver enjoys the freedom of breathing underwater by using the SCUBA apparatus based on the cylinders filled with compressed breathable gas, connected to regulators that deliver gas at environmental pressure to optimize comfort.

Since it is an underwater sport, there are some requirements, such as good physical and mental health, you should not have any contraindicated medical conditions and an adequate respiratory lung function is of prior importance. You have to be at least 8 years old, and you should be confident in swimming in deep water. Last but not least, be ready to fall in love with the ocean!

Scuba diving is a sport that should be handled with care. Emergencies and injuries can happen, therefore, a cover is of prior importance. Moreover, it is also required by Spanish law.

We are an authorized diving center and our insurance partner is DAN. So you can easily obtain your insurance coverage with us. There are affordable plans for one -three days, one week, one month, and yearly which cover scuba diving accidents all over the world.

Scuba Diving is easy like Sunday morning, even easier than snorkeling, because the circuit that we are breathing from is closed so no water can enter and challenge our breathing.

Yes, of course! We offer different beginner courses that you can choose from. Entry level programmes are Open Water Diver and Scuba Diver  that will make you a certified diver able to dive all over the world for your whole life.

Our certification agency SSI,  allows students to complete the theory at home, leaving only in-water training and training dives to complete the course. The eLearning in form of an online coursework, takes students through the academic training with slideshows, videos and narration, making the curriculum interactive and more impactful. Free online training is already available here.

We highly recommend knowing how to swim and especially being comfortable in deep water to scuba dive. For the beginners Basic Diver program you simply need to float confortably in water you can’t stand in. For the entry level programs like Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver a water fitness evaluation is needed.

If you are a beginner you can choose to start the Scuba Diver or the Open Water Diver, depending on the availability (nromally one day) and on your goals (12 meters maximum depth , always guided by a professional diver).

To try scuba diving you simply need your eagerness and a swimsuit.

We provide high quality scuba diving gear, including masks, fins, boots, dive computers (for students), buoyancy compensators, regulators, and scuba wetsuits with each training dive, together with insurance.

A mask and computer are definitely the easiest items to take with you wherever you go, when chosen to be a certified diver.

We provide computers in our full equipment rental, but not every dive center does, so having your own will ensure your safety, specially to keep your no decompression limits updated.

We will gladly guide you with our expertise gained over decades.

The depth limit depends mainly on the certification level but also on the age.

Eight and nine years old kids have a maximum depth limit of 5 meters and can dive only in confined waters, whereas between ten and eleven the maximum depth allowed is 12 meters.

Scuba diving depth limits:

For the moment, we only offer recreational diving courses but we are working to enrich our offer with technical diving.

You can find our entire offerings here: https://www.goodiving.com/diving-courses/

From 8 years old kids can scuba dive in confined waters up to 5 meters. We offer the Scuba Explorer program for Kids for children to experience scuba diving. It’s a dedicated 1:1 training, meaning one kid is guided by one instructor. On top of that, we have dedicated equipment for kids, and decads of experience in scuba diving with children.

We highly recommend our Scuba Skills Update program when out of the water for more than six months or one year, depending on the level of experience. After a long “surface interval” it is easy to forget things and to lose confidence.

Our Scuba Skills Update program consists on a simple refresh about the fundamentals of scuba diving, a practice of the basic skills in the pool with the equipment and one dive in the ocean with no dive time limits. All accompanied by our highly qualified instructor. It also includes everything you will need, from scuba insurance, equipment rental, a digital manual and recognition. With a Scuba Skills Update you refresh the theory and your skills to retake confidence and dive safely.

Yes, of course. Neither for learning how to dive nor for fun diving with us, you require a buddy. You will find yourself surrounded by likeminded people, that are interested in diving but without a buddy. Moreover, we have enough dive instructors to accompany you, so in any case you will have a buddy.Don’t let the lack of having a buddy stop you from diving!

We are here on a volcanic island with the highest peak of Spain – El Teide. So it gets here very fast very steep, reaching up to 3.7 km above the sea level. If you plan to go in high altitude, regardless of go hiking in high altitudes or taking a plane, after diving you should integrate a surface interval:

  • After one dive it is recommended to wait 12 hours
  • After two or more consecutive dives, it is recommended to wait 24 hours.

However, the other way around, going from high to low altitude will not affect you.

After scuba diving, avoid flying or going to high altitudes for 24 hours, exhausting exercises, dehydration, massages, and activities with hot water such as hot saunas, jacuzzies, or baths.

DPVs also known as underwater scooters are motorized apparatus that allows divers to cover a lot of underwater territory in a short time. Our Scubajets are eco-friendly because litium battery operating, and can reach a maximum speed of 120 meters per minute. They are also super light, indeed they weight only 3 kilogrammes and underwater they are only 1 kg negative. A Scubajet dive will wide your chance  to explore different underwater landscapes and wrecks, enjoying the teaming marine life of our Ocean.

The perception of vision underwater changes in unique ways. Refraction is an interesting optical illusion that you can experience. Light rays bend as they pass from the water into the airspace in your mask and this makes objects look 33% larger and 25% closer than they actually are.

The deeper we dive, the more warm colors (like red, orange or yellow) diminish in intensity and virtually disappear until we see only blues and purples. This fenomenon is called “absorption” and it results from the properties of water combined with the scattering of suspended particles, which make the light conditions underwater very different than those on land.

Due to the physics of light underwater, an image that captures the full spectrum of colors without a stobe is only achievable if the light has travelled lessa than 5 meters. The distance between the camera and the subject is not the only factor that matters, but the distance to the surface as well. Thus translates into the most important principle of underwater photography:”The closer, the better”.  When artificial light is used , the distance between the flash ad the object, and the return path to the camera’s sensor are the main concern. Therefore, a good rule of thumb is that the path of light equals double the distance between the flash and the object.

The second most important, after breathing, is to see underwater. So choosing the right mask that fits perfectly to your face is crucial.

To try a mask, you place it on your face. Important here: you put it without the straps around your head. With the mask in your face, you breathe in through your nose and hold your breath. If the mask stays on your face without holding it, it fits well.

We have plenty of mask models here to make sure to find the perfect fit for everybody.

We are driven by our big passion for the Ocean, we are curious about all the marine life, from the smaller to the biggest animal and plant.

With our background built from years of field observations and research, we are able to enrich your scuba adventure showing you different species underwater and helping you to understand their interaction within the ecosystem in which they live.

Canary Islands are known to be the region of eternal Spring.

Thanks to the Teide, the 3rd biggest volcano in the world, considering the Ocean floor, we have 25 different climate areas in Tenerife.

In the South the air temperature fluctuates between 27 and 24°C.

Winter is definitely the highest season on the island.

Underwater instead every couple of months provides its own highlights:

  • The months between November and February are the Angelshark season. Offering the possibility to spot this local and endangered species.
  • March and April are the best to spot nudys and gelatinous Plankton.
  • During spring and early summer is possible to observe our green turtle in their best relaxed mood having their meal in shallow waters, nudys and gelatinous plankton like ctenophores and siphonophores.
  • May and June are the best months to find slipper lobster and rays in breeding season. Our dives are timing with many pregnant stighrays who just come back to shallow waters to give birth and reproduce.

So we challenge you to find  your  favourite season, depending on your favourite marine life.

Our water temperatures range from a minimum of 19°C in winter up to 25°C in summer. In our equipment rental, we provide hooded wetsuits of 5.3 mm and 7 mm thickness and boots to keep your body comfortable during the dive.

We have the highest marine biodiversity in Europe. From sharks to sea turtles the endangered species are numerous and many can be found only here.

Besides the marine life also the lava rock formations are stunning and some cool wrecks are sunk around our costs.

Generally we offer three dives per day.

Starting in the morning with two dives, leaving at 9:00 am from the base. After one hour surface interval, we have a second one. The third dive is  in the afternoon, leaving at 2:00 pm and once per week, we are happy to offer a Night Dive after the sunset.

We choose the dive sites according to the weather conditions and the level of experience and expectations of our divers. Having 13 years of experience, we can choose the best dive sites for the best diving experience.

Yes, we  are happy to offer transfer within a range of 15 km from our diving center included in any diving package or program. Practically our range goes from Adeje to El Médano.

We are happy to offer our affordable picture package for only 20 € shared with the whole dive group, to support the maintenance costs of our cameras and video editing programmes. For exclusive dives of only one person, we offer special discount.

We offer exclusive snorkeling trips for small groups, guided by our Instructors and Marine Biology specialists. The full equipment rental is included in this trip, as well as the transfer and some snacks based on little cakes. Please understand that we do not offer sole snorkeling equipment rental for you to go snorkeling by yourself to ensure the perpetual quality of our equipment.

In Tenerife, we are lucky enough to have access to many fantastic dive sites just from the shore. Meaning that we can simply walk off the beach and immediately start exploring the dive site with ease, reaching up to 40 meters depth. However, when doing so we have to consider waves, tides and currents that could impact our entrance to the ocean. Therefore, we always check the conditions before and decide shortly ahead to which dive site we go. In this way, we can ensure a safe dive.

A wise man once said: “there are two kinds of divers: those who pee in their wetsuits and those who lie”.

Diving below the water surface with a constant pressure of several bars on your body, our kidneys undergo the natural urge to produce urine to lower pressure.

We use a powerful disinfectant in our wetsuit detergent to ensure maximum cleanliness of our wetsuits.

If you really can not hold it, open the zip and flash it up.

Physical and Medical FAQ

Scuba diving is a sport activity so it is fundamental to make sure to be fit for it. When you booked online with us, we send you beforehand a medical questionnaire. We highly recommend fill this in before you plan come to us, at best when you are still in your home country. In this way, in the case of crossing a “yes” in the questionnaire, you can go to your home doctor and get the medical approval from the physicians that knows you best.

Scuba diving breaks down barriers. We have special equipment that can help people with arms or legs disabilities to move underwater and our house reef is wheelchair friendly. All scuba diving activities requires the completion of a medical questionnaire, should any positive answer interfere with any diving-related activity, you will need to obtain medical clearance from your doctor.

When someone has a cold or flu, congestion around the Eustachian tubes and sinuses is very common; this may prevent equalization of the air tubes due to excess pressure.  You should refrain from diving until you have fully recovered to avoid injuries.

There are many different factors that can cause asthma and also the type of asthmatic reaction can vary. When diving we breath purified dried air so depending on your conditions you can or not scuba dive. This is why is so important to have your physician clearance for scuba diving in this case.

Our team is specialized in scuba diving and marine biology, not being doctors the only person who can answer to this question is your physician.

Yes, with the approval of your doctor beforehand, we are happy to take you diving with us. Dedicated underwater signs for diabetes related issues exist and we will go through them with you in our dive briefing.

Our dive instructors are trained and experienced to work with people that have a disability. We already enjoyed diving with people of different disabilities.

Our house reef is wheelchair accessible. We have dedicated equipment to assure you a safe and joyful diving experience.

In general, it is recommended to wait at least 6 months after a surgery to start diving again. For more information check out the Recreational Diving Medical Screening System: https://www.uhms.org/resources/recreational-diving-medical-screening-system.html

During our beginners program briefing we clearly explain how to equalize the ears and avoid pain. If you follow our suggestions your ears will be safe from the pain.

There are special ear plugs developed for people that have equalization problems during scuba diving. Those ear plugs have a hole in the middle. So while diving with occlusive ear plugs, the plug will push up against the tympanic membrane which could result in a barotrauma to the ear, those special ear plugs defeat the purpose.  Due to the lack of sufficient evidence, we do not recommend wearing ear plugs while diving.

The second most important thing for you to enjoy your dive is the sight. But what if you have a limited sight even on land? We recommend diving with daily contact lenses. In this way, you can wear whatever mask suits you best. They are also prescribed masks for different diopters. However, we do not recommend using them, especially when your sight is very limited, as you will be unable to see when having your mask off.

A moustache indeed can affect you since the silicone of the mask can not find grip, resulting water enters the mask more easily. Luckily, there are tricks how you can easily remove the water from your mask and masks some masks models thats suits beards better.

Due to the fact that braces and teeth are not compressible, wearing a brace should not pose any issues. Yet some divers may experience discomfort or tension when biting down on the block of their scuba regulator mouthpiece while their teeth are still being realigned. We sell special reisin mouthpiece that are customizable on your teeth shape and offer the maximum comfort.

Due to deficient data, the effects of diving on the fetus are not enough researched. Indeed there is a potential risk of decompression sickness and gas bubbles crossing the placenta. It’s best to avoid scuba diving during pregnancy to prioritize the health and safety of both mother and child.
